Spicy Lemons chat favourite tracks of 2021, traditional Irish music and new single “Young One”

Pinnies
How have you found the whole release process so far?

Toby
It’s been really good. It’s been quite exciting really.

Pinnies
Cause its your first major release right?

Toby
Yeah, almost a year ago we out a demo but we’ve taken that off everywhere now, so this is our first release on the major streaming services.

Pinnies
What’s been the most exciting part of being in a band for you so far?

Toby
For me, I really like whenever we get to perform live and just the whole process of creating a song’s been really fun.

Zac
Yeah pretty much the same thing. Plus it gets me out of study for Year 12 hahaha. Nah, not really I just love performing in front of people. It’s just something that you can’t really get anywhere else really. So it’s been really cool.

Luke
I like the garage jams. Always good to get a few hours of garage jams in here and there.

Pinnies
So how did you record and produce your new single, “Young One”?

Toby
So we made a demo of it ourselves and we were lucky enough to be found by a guy called Connor Massey, who’s in the band Deadshowws and he kind of took us under his wing and took us to the studio and produced the track for us. So yeah, we we’re lucky with that.

Pinnies
What was the inspiration for the track?

Toby
It’s got a bit of an interesting beginning hahaha. Luke and I are both in the same year at school and we had a music assignment coming up and it was well, an “assignment” – it was really just the teacher trying to get the class to actually do work. But what came out of it was the start of this song. So from there we kind of, you know, got Zach on board with the drums and added some words and we all thought it was pretty cool.

Pinnies
Looking into the future, if you could choose one ideal country that you’d love to tour one day what’s your pick?

Luke
I know mine, I’ve been getting into a bit of Irish punk stuff cause I play traditional Irish music as well. And so, I don’t know if many people would be interested in our music over there, but I reckon It’d be going to be pretty cool.

Pinnies
Would you ever consider playing a raditional Irish cover at one of your shows?

Luke
Well we’ve done a few traditional Irish covers before, just as like school assignments and we’ve got a pretty good one going called Drunken Lullabies by Flogging Molly.

Pinnies
Nice, that’d be sick.

Toby
Yeah it’s always cool whenever we bring out the banjo.

Pinnies
Who plays Banjo, is it you Luke?

Luke
Yeah I do.

Toby
In terms of a country, I’m not really too sure. I reckon just around Europe would be pretty cool. Have you got a country Zac?

Zac
America really interests me a lot, I reckonthat’d be cool. I mean, that’s probably the toughest market to break into but that’d be pretty cool if we made it there one day.

Pinnies
Have you got any more music that you’re planning to release soon?

Toby
As of now, we don’t have anything recorded. But we have got a fair few more originals starting to build up. So eventually, once we decide which one we’d like to take to the studio, we’ll have more but yeah we’re working on more originals in a few different styles as well.

Pinnies
What’s your favourite track or album that’s been released this year so far?

Toby
I’d say for me, I’ve been really into a lot of local artists, so there’s another band from around where we’re based called Soda Simulator and they’ve got a single called Slower Summer and that one’s been on loop for me.

Pinnies
Yeah I’ve got that one in a playlist too. It’s a really good track.

Luke
Mine would have to be either Deadshowws new EP – Sick of Trying, I’ve literally had it on repeat. It’s kind of bad how much I’ve been playing it hahaha. But yeah that and Soda Simulator’s Slower Summer.

Zac
Yeah, the Deadshowws EP is really good but I’ve also really been into Skegss’ new album Rehearsal. That’s a great album.

Spicy Lemons’ new single “Young One” will be out on all streaming platforms this Friday, 16/07/21
